Best YouTube summarizer Chrome extensions in 2026

There are dozens of YouTube summarizer extensions in the Chrome Web Store. Most of them do roughly the same thing, but the details matter — especially around pricing, privacy, and what "summary" actually means.

We installed the top five, ran each one on the same set of ten videos (ranging from 8-minute tutorials to 2-hour podcasts), and compared the results side by side.

What actually matters

Before comparing tools, we defined five criteria. These are the things that separate a useful daily tool from a novelty you uninstall after a week:

  • SpeedDoes the summary appear in seconds, or do you wait 30+ seconds staring at a spinner?
  • StructureDo you get organized key points and timestamps, or a wall of unformatted text?
  • Free tierHow many summaries can you run without paying? Is the free version actually usable?
  • PrivacyDoes the extension store your viewing history? Share data with third parties? Use your data for training?
  • Q&ACan you ask follow-up questions about the video without re-watching it?

Extension comparison — how the top five stack up across speed, structure, free tier, privacy, and Q&A

tocly

  • Speed: Summary in ~5 seconds with TL;DR, key points, and clickable timestamps
  • Q&A: Follow-up questions with sourced answers that link back to specific moments
  • Free tier: 3 summaries per day on the free plan — no credit card needed
  • Privacy: Transcripts processed in real-time, never stored on servers
  • Range: Videos up to 3 hours long, 19 languages supported
  • Weakness: Newer to the market — smaller user community

Eightify

  • Speed: Fast summaries with key points, comparable to tocly
  • Free tier: 3 summaries per week (not per day) — hits the limit fast
  • Account: Requires signup before first use
  • Q&A: Not available
  • Strength: Established player with a large user base and polished UI
  • Weakness: Weekly free limit means you're effectively on a trial, not a free tier

Glasp

  • Speed: Moderate — summaries take 10-15 seconds
  • Focus: Web highlighting + video summaries + social features
  • Privacy: Community-driven — your highlights are public by default
  • Strength: Great for researchers who want to share and discover annotations
  • Weakness: Tries to do too many things; less focused on speed and structure

YouTube Summary with ChatGPT

  • How it works: Extracts transcript and sends it to your ChatGPT session
  • Requirement: Needs a ChatGPT account (and often ChatGPT Plus for longer videos)
  • Output: Depends on your prompt — no built-in timestamps or structured format
  • Strength: Full ChatGPT flexibility for custom analysis
  • Weakness: Slowest workflow — multiple steps, tab switching, and inconsistent output quality

NoteGPT

  • Speed: 8-12 seconds for most videos
  • Features: Summaries, mind maps, and note-taking in one tool
  • Free tier: Limited daily summaries with account required
  • Strength: Mind map visualization sets it apart from pure summarizers
  • Weakness: Feature-heavy UI that can feel overwhelming for quick summaries

The verdict

For dedicated YouTube summarization, tocly and Eightify are the strongest options. tocly offers more daily free summaries (3/day vs. 3/week), built-in Q&A, and stronger privacy defaults. Eightify has the more established brand.

Glasp is the right choice if your workflow involves highlighting web articles alongside videos. NoteGPT is worth trying if you want mind maps. ChatGPT-based tools are flexible but slow — fine for occasional deep analysis, impractical for daily use.

Pick the tool that matches your volume. If you summarize one video a week, almost anything works. If you process five videos a day, the differences in speed, structure, and free tier compound fast.
